We know that every seventy years or so,
God’s universe splits open.

Like a pomegranate.
Like a pumpkin.
Like a watermelon.

Like a man who can no longer hold his breath and can think only 
about his last one—
how it is no longer made of air,
but saltwater.

And for a split-second, maybe half of that,
he thinks about how it wil…
